Things You Should Know About Unilateral Hearing Loss
It is often that hearing loss tends to impact both the ears. But in reality, there are chances for single-sided deafness or unilateral hearing loss. Some babies are born with this defect, but older children and adults may face these problems later. Unilateral hearing loss is when one ear is within the hearing limits, and the other ear has a reduction in hearing capacity. So, you relate them with your eyesight, where one is slightly worse than the other. However, there are also treatments available for these problems, and there are many hearing aid shops in Chennai that offer customized hearing devices for hearing loss. Hence, in this post, let us see the things you should know about unilateral hearing loss and the potential treatments to overcome the problem.
Cause:
The foremost thing is to know the root cause of unilateral hearing loss. Many researchers say that one baby is affected for every 1000 babies, and around 7% of adults experience this problem. Similarly, about 60,000 people have unilateral hearing loss despite age and gender.
The primary reasons for this hearing loss type are
- Age
- Exposure to loud noise for a long time without any ear protectio
- Injures
- Illness
- Tumor
- Infection in one of the ears
- Excess of ear wax in the inner ear canal
The causes for unilateral hearing vary for each person. There are definite reasons for hearing loss in the cases of injuries, ear wax, infection, and tumors. It is also not essential to have a definite reason for the hearing loss despite age.
Diagnosis:
Single-sided hearing loss is hard to diagnose, like bilateral hearing loss, where the affected person gets to learn about their reduction in hearing ability much faster. It takes time to learn about unilateral hearing loss because they keep hearing with the unaffected ear.
The diagnosis for single-sided hearing loss is based on injury and infection. But in some cases, the hearing loss on one side can be a symptom of a bigger issue or disease.
So, if you feel there is a reduction in hearing loss after an accident or ear injury, it is ideal to have an audiologist-administered test. The audiologist in Chennai is quite good at checking the unilateral condition with the same test conducted for bilateral conditions.
Treatment:
So, the cure for unilateral hearing loss depends on the cause.
- For injury, illness, earwax, or tumors, the hearing ability may return as soon as treating the root cause.
- In case of ear damage or aging, the treatment is the same as bilateral hearing loss.
How about hearing aids?
It is possible to wear hearing aids on the affected but not ones used for bilateral hearing. In the bilateral hearing, the devices are a self-contained process where the noise is amplified within the ear canal and allows the user to hear the sound. But for unilateral hearing loss, the device should transmit the noise to the unaffected ear rather than amplifying it within the ear. The Siemens hearing aid dealers in Chennai have personalized hearing aids for unilateral hearing loss where the user can hear the sound clearly.
Hence, these are the crucial things one should know about unilateral hearing. We at Adro Hearing Aids offer you the best hearing aid price in Chennai without compromising the quality of devices.
