What is Tinnitus?
Before we go further, let us first understand this condition a little bit. Tinnitus’ symptom is not the same for everyone. For some, it can either be a ringing in the ears or a hiss. Some might perceive a sound to be soft or very loud. The rest of them may hear a short-pitched or high-pitched noise.
Even though there is no known cure for Tinnitus, many therapies promise good results to ease the symptoms.
Tinnitus Therapies
1 – Tinnitus Retraining Therapy
As the name would suggest, the therapy strives to equip the brain to react less to loud noises. The audiologist at your nearest hearing aid centre in Chennai will recondition the brain so that it does not pay attention to the constant buzz in the ears. When the brain is constantly made to learn and cope with the sounds, they begin to perceive the loudness as normal. Therefore, TRT therapy may need a couple of sessions before they show some results for you.
2 – CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
Usually, a person with Tinnitus would have high levels of stress, anxiety, and insomnia. All these psychological effects stem from the uneasiness of the condition. Therefore, in CBT, the objective is not to treat the condition itself but change the way a person responds to the noises. Many studies have shown that the reaction to Tinnitus decides how loud or low the sound is to a person.
The therapy will focus on replacing all the negative thoughts with positive ones. It will allow the person to cope better with Tinnitus even though no direct intervention is made to reduce the condition.
3 – Hearing devices
Sometimes, Tinnitus arises from hearing loss. When the hearing is lost, the brain begins to change in the manner in which it processes sound. Therefore, getting a good quality device from any one of the hearing aid shops in Chennai is highly recommended. A study has found that 60% of people with Tinnitus felt comfortable after wearing a hearing aid.
4 – Masking devices
There are many customized hearing devices available with Siemens hearing aid dealers in Chennai. These sound-masking devices emit white noises that are slightly above the Tinnitus. The soothing sounds will reduce the effect of Tinnitus. Therefore, a person will be at ease since the constant ringing is replaced by ambient sounds.
5 – Notch Therapy
In this technique, a middle ground is identified by playing sounds at various frequencies. The patient will select a frequency that is closest to the Tinnitus noise. Therefore, this therapy will push Tinnitus into the background instead of masking it.
