How is tinnitus diagnosed
Understanding Tinnitus
Tinnitus is the perception of ringing, buzzing, hissing, or other sounds in the ears without an external sound source. It can affect one or both ears and may vary in intensity. Proper diagnosis is essential to identify the underlying cause and provide effective management. At Adro Hearing Aid Centre in Arumanai, our expert audiologists follow a structured and comprehensive approach to diagnose tinnitus accurately and recommend the right treatment solutions.
How Tinnitus Is Diagnosed at Adro Arumanai
1. Detailed Case History & Symptom Analysis
The audiologist will begin by asking detailed questions about your tinnitus, such as:
- When the tinnitus started
- Whether it affects one ear or both ears
- The type of sound (ringing, buzzing, humming)
- Situations where tinnitus feels worse
Associated symptoms like hearing loss, dizziness, ear pain, ear blockage sensation, or sensitivity to loud sounds are also carefully evaluated.
2. Comprehensive Hearing & Tinnitus Tests
A complete hearing evaluation is performed to assess:
- Degree and type of hearing loss
- Pitch and loudness of tinnitus
- Impact of tinnitus on daily communication
At Adro Arumanai, we offer free ear tests to help identify whether tinnitus is linked to hearing loss or other ear-related conditions.
3. Examination of Related Areas
In some cases, tinnitus may be associated with issues beyond the ear. The audiologist may recommend evaluation of:
- Nose and throat
- Jaw joints (TMJ)
- Neck or related structures
This helps rule out non-auditory causes of tinnitus.
4. Bilateral vs Unilateral Tinnitus Assessment
Tinnitus commonly occurs in both ears (bilateral tinnitus). Clinical experience shows that bilateral hearing aids with tinnitus maskers are often more effective than unilateral solutions, especially when tinnitus is associated with hearing loss.
5. Tinnitus Masker Hearing Aid Trial
At Adro Hearing Aid Centre Arumanai, we provide:
- Advanced tinnitus masker hearing aids
- Trial sessions to evaluate relief and comfort
- Personalised fine-tuning for effective tinnitus management
