1. Otoscopic Examination
The ear impression process always begins with a detailed otoscopic examination.
- The audiologist gently pulls the pinna backward to clearly view the ear canal and eardrum

2. Checking for Earwax
If earwax (cerumen) is present in the ear canal, ear impression should not be taken immediately.
- Earwax can affect the accuracy of the impression
- It may also cause discomfort or complications
Earwax must be safely removed before proceeding, especially for custom ear moulds used in:
- BTE (Behind-The-Ear)
- ITE (In-The-Ear)
- CIC (Completely-In-Canal)
- IIC (Invisible-In-Canal) hearing aids
3. Screening for Ear Infections
If there are any signs of outer or middle ear infection, the ear impression procedure is postponed.
- Taking impressions during infection can be unsafe
- The patient is advised appropriate medical treatment first
