What is Hyperacusis and its causes?
Generally, people would consider that there is a hearing loss when sounds become muffled. If someone hears fewer sounds, then they think it is a hearing disorder. However, the opposite is also a disorder. And that is Hyperacusis. It is a condition where a person has a heightened sense of hearing. In this post, you will learn what is Hyperacusis and its causes. If you say, ‘loud noises bother me’ then you may have to consult an audiologist in Chennai.
Let us now see the nature of this hearing disorder and what causes it.
What is Hyperacusis?
Hyperacusis amplifies normal sounds to an intolerable din in the ears. The brain processes the input but magnifies the output more than the regular decibel. However, this sound sensitivity syndrome is rare. Only 1 out of 50,000 people face this issue.
Symptoms of Hyperacusis
The most evident sign of Hyperacusis is seen when a person is sensitive to sounds. Sounds in our daily lives do not seem normal to anyone with this hearing condition. A regular conversation would be unbearable to a person affected with Hyperacusis. Even trivial noises like a car engine or a dog barking can cause severe uneasiness to the person. These symptoms can translate into depression, relationship problems, and anxiety. An individual would not be in a mindset to cope well with the situation.
If you think you might have Hyperacusis, then visit an audiologist near you. The doctor would diagnose and prescribe either medicine or suggest a compact hearing aid machine in Chennai.
Causes of Hyperacusis
Our brain recognizes sounds as vibrations. The problem occurs when these vibrations are perceived differently by the brain. It causes confusion and discomfort to a person. Some health issues can cause this disorder.
- Lyme disease
- A heavy injury to the head
- Migraine
- Autism
- Meniere’s disease
- Ear damage due to some medications
- Viral infection in the inner ear
What are the types of Hyperacusis?
Hyperacusis can be classified into:
- Vestibular Hyperacusis
- Cochlear Hyperacusis
Vestibular Hyperacusis can have severe effects like dizziness or loss of balance. The other type will cause pain and slight discomfort for a person.
Hyperacusis diagnosis and treatment
Before an audiologist can recommend the best Siemens hearing aid dealers in Chennai for a hearing aid, they will first diagnose whether you have Hyperacusis. In this step, the doctor will perform an audiometry test. He will test your hearing ability in different frequencies. You will be given a headphone where the sounds will increase in decibels, and the doctor records the frequencies at which you are most uncomfortable.
The initial treatment would start by addressing the disease that is causing Hyperacusis like a head injury or viral infection. If that is not the case, then the doctor might suggest a therapy that will make you cope well with the situation. Sometimes, he will prescribe a hearing aid for you. There are other treatment options like Auditory Integration Therapy, where the affected person would be made to listen to sounds at different levels throughout the day. This technique will help put the brain’s processing capacity back to normal. If you need a hearing aid, visit Adro Hearing Aid.
