Understanding Noise-Induced Hearing Loss: Protecting Your Hearing Health

We tend to take our hearing for granted, until we begin to realize the signs of damage. Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is more prevalent than you realize, and once it occurs, there’s no going back. The good news? It’s completely preventable. At Adro Hearing Aid Centre, we want to be able to inform you on how to defend your hearing so that you can appreciate the sounds of life in the years to come.

What Is Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (Nihl)?

NIHL occurs when loud noises hurt the small hair cells in your inner ear. These cells transmit sound signals to your brain, and once they are hurt, they don’t regenerate. That’s permanent hearing loss. The worst part? You may not even know the damage is occurring until it’s too late.

How Loud Is Too Loud?

Sound is quantified in decibels (dB), and anything over 85 dB can begin to damage your hearing over time. To put things into perspective:

  • 30 dB – A whisper, leaves rustling (Completely safe)
  • 60 dB – Background music, normal conversation (No problem here)
  • 85 dB – Lawnmower, busy traffic (Hearing protection required for extended exposure)
  • 100 dB – Motorcycle engines, concerts (Damage can begin in 15 minutes!)
  • 120 dB – Fireworks, ambulance sirens (Immediate danger)
  • 140 dB+ – Gunfire, explosions (Immediate and permanent damage)

Common Sounds That Can Damage Your Hearing

You don’t need to work in a noisy factory to be in danger. NIHL can catch you off guard from common activities such as:

  • Playing music loudly through earbuds – If others can hear your music, it’s too loud!
  • Going to noisy environments – Concerts, bars, and movie theaters are often louder than you think.
  • Employing power tools or heavy appliances – Hairdryers, blenders, and lawnmowers all count.
  • Working around noisy spaces – Construction yards, airports, and factories are the worst areas.

Warning Signs Your Hearing Is In Trouble

Loss of hearing isn’t sudden. It catches you out. If you see any of the signs below, maybe it’s time to have a hearing checkup:

Voices Sound Distant Or Fuzzy

You find yourself repeating and having other people repeat what they’ve just said to you

  • Ringing or buzzing in your ears (tinnitus)
  • Loud noises become uncomfortable or painful suddenly

Simple Ways To Protect Your Hearing

The most effective way to battle NIHL? Prevention. Here’s what you can do:

  • Turn Down the Volume – Keep your personal devices at 60% of the maximum volume.
  • Wear Ear Protection – Earplugs or noise-canceling headphones can make a huge difference.
  • Take Listening Breaks – Give your ears a rest, especially in noisy environments.
  • Be Noise-Aware – Use a decibel meter app to measure sound levels around you.
  • Get Regular Hearing Tests – Catch hearing loss early before it worsens.
